What do you enjoy about working in the construction industry?
Being able to work on a variety of projects is definitely a highlight for me, no two projects are ever the same and each brings a new challenge. I love being a problem solver, and if there’s something new that I’ve never worked on before and I figure out a design solution to it, that’s a massive highlight and accomplishment for me.
What would you say to those who are considering construction for a career to inspire them?
Don’t give up! I almost did when I didn’t get into the university I thought I wanted. But then I got offered a place at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and decided to give it a go. It turned out to be one the best decisions I could have made. I really enjoy my job, with the opportunities that it brings and knowing that we are helping people, one project at a time is a huge plus for me.
When I was in school, I really wish there had been someone like a Construction Ambassador around to talk through all the possibilities and opportunities in the construction industry and were able to give me their honest opinion about working in the sector.
The way I look at my career is that you get out what you put into it. You almost certainly won’t earn millions and you won’t always work a 9-5 day, but when you see a project after completion, and you know that you had a hand in making that happen- that’s where you get real job satisfaction and it makes it all worth it.
If you had to give someone just one piece of advice about getting into construction, what would it be?
Do it! There are endless opportunities in the construction industry and you’ll find something that you enjoy and look forward to each day. If it is design oriented, site based or even research focused, there’s always something for you. You know, it’s not just about bricklaying!
