From school I went to do a one-year Youth Training Scheme course for Electrical works and became an electrician. Whilst at college, I also trained to be a car mechanic. On completion I secured my apprenticeship with a lightning protection company and started my onsite training working towards my NVQ. And well… the rest is history.
Learning a trade will stay with you forever, it will help you in so many different ways and you will never be without a career!
I’m currently a Senior Lightning Protection Supervisor; I work on new projects to make sure they are completed on time to the highest standard possible. I travel the UK and get to see all different places with my job. I am responsible for a team of three men on projects ranging in complexity.
My favourite thing about my job is that no two days are ever the same; I can be anywhere in the UK seeing different places and meeting different people while working on projects which are never the same.
The highlight of my day is facing a new challenge every day and finding a solution. I like learning new things to help me find a solution; you’re never too old to learn!
I want my career to take me to the highest position possible. The sky is the limit.
I would say go for it and learn a trade in construction. Learning a trade will stay with you forever, it will help you in so many different ways and you will never be without a career!
