Concrete Finisher

Concrete Finishers smooth and finish the exposed surfaces of poured concrete floors and other structures.


The Role

  • Knowledge of a variety of finishing techniques and employ processes to help prevent surface cracking
  • Checking the concrete forms for accurate construction
  • Setting and aligning the forms
  • Spreading, levelling and smoothing the concrete using a variety of specialist equipment
  • Moulding expansion joints and edges
  • Monitoring the effects of weather conditions on the concrete curing process
  • Facilitating concrete pouring
  • The work can be strenuous and physically demanding
  • Project completion and working hours are often affected by weather conditions and the seasons
  • This role is a full-time position, so the working week is usually between 35 and 40 hours per week

Salary

  • Trainee and newly trained Concrete Finishers can earn in the region of £11,000 to £15,000
  • Trained with experience Concrete Finishers can earn in the region of £20,000 to £25,000
  • More experienced Concrete Finishers may earn in excess of £25,000

Salaries typically depend on location, employer and level of responsibility. 


Qualifications and Training

Although no formal entry qualifications are required to become a Concrete Finisher, it is generally recommended to achieve four GCSEs, including maths and English, at grade C or above, or their equivalents, such as the Welsh Baccalaureate or Scottish Nationals.

While previous experience as a Concrete Finisher may not always be necessary, many employers will value experience of working on a construction site.

Gaining employment as a Mason’s Mate, working under the supervision of an experienced Concrete Finisher, will allow for the development of the specific skills required for the role.
