Structural engineer technician

Technician structural engineers are a key part of the design and construction team, working alongside a wider design and construction team.


The Role

  • Working closely with the design team other professionals on construction plans
  • Developing design ideas, using computer aided design (CAD)
  • Investigating the properties of materials like glass, steel and concrete, and advising on which may be most suitable for the job
  • Working out the loads and stresses on different parts of a structure like the foundations, beams, arches and walls
  • Assist in the inspection of unsafe buildings and recommending options for repairs or demolition
  • The work is office and site based.
  • There may be an opportunity for you to work on projects around the world, depending on your employer and the nature of the projects you are working on. 
  • The working week is between 35 and 40 hours

Salary

  • Newly trained Structural Engineer Technicians can earn in the region of £14,500 - £18,000
  • Trained with experience Structural Engineer Technicians can earn in the region of £18,000 - £28,000
  • Senior or Chartered Structural Engineer Technicians can earn in the region of £28,000 - £36,000

Salaries typically range depending on location and level of responsibility. Salaries and career options improve with chartered status.


Qualifications and Training

To enter the structural engineering profession at technician level you will need a BTEC HNC/HND or foundation degree in engineering. With further training and experience on the job you could work up to engineer status.
