Welcome to SkillBuild. Here you'll find everything you need to know about the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices.

SkillBuild 2021 has begun!

SkillBuild 2021, the UK’s largest and longest-running construction competition for trainees and apprentices has officially started.

We are delighted to be showcasing the very best in upcoming UK construction talent, highlighting the promising future ahead for the industry with such a skilled future workforce. Following a difficult year, construction trainees and apprentices have overcome tremendous odds to continue their learning and development. Colleges and training providers have done a fantastic job in continuing to deliver support and training to their students, helping to nurture the next wave of construction employees. The construction industry is looking bright – and we can’t wait to celebrate its collective achievements during SkillBuild 2021.

The SkillBuild 2021 qualifiers begin on 27th May, with the physical task competitions taking place across a number of locations throughout the UK, and finish on 24th June. Online assessments will run remotely later in the year, during the summer break.

Competitions will run across 10 individual skill areas:

  • BRK Bricklaying
  • CAR Carpentry
  • CBM Furniture & Cabinet Making
  • JOI Joinery
  • PAD Painting & Decorating
  • PLA Plastering
  • PDS Plastering & Drywall Systems
  • STO Stonemasonry
  • WFT Wall & Floor Tiling
  • FSW Foundation Skills - Woodworking

Qualifier competitions process

Due to the pandemic, SkillBuild is running a little differently this year. Qualifier competitions will be managed individually by colleges and training providers, so no travel between locations is necessary for tutors, competitors, judges or the delivery team.

  • Competitors will complete a physical task and an online assessment
  • Should physical tasks prove impossible to complete e.g. due to the reintroduction of a lockdown, the relevant competitors will be judged wholly on their online assessments
  • The requirements of physical tasks for evidence collection and submission, and the level of tutor involvement, varies across skills
  • Online assessments will be accessible remotely, so no college or training provider involvement is required.

You can find out more about the overall approach and how evidence is captured for each skill here.
