A plasterer uses both undercoat and finish plaster to the inside of properties, they can also run up moulds for decorative areas such as ceiling and walls.
The plasterer is indispensable to most domestic and commercial worksites, making walls and ceilings smooth and ready for decorating, plus many other requirements such as soundproofing and weatherproofing. They mix and apply different kinds of plaster to inside walls and ceilings and cover outside walls with coatings such as sand and cement render, pebble-dash, stone-effect materials and even machine-applied finishings.
There are two types of plasterer, Solid Plasterer and Fibrous Plasterer, but many do both. Solid plastering is the application of wet finishes to surfaces and putting protective coverings such as pebble-dashing on external walls. Fibrous plastering involves creating ornamental plasterwork (such as ceiling roses and cornices) using a mixture of plaster and short fibres shaped with moulds and casts.
This competition has been designed reflect the role of a plasterer and the standards that are expected within the construction industry.
Competitors will be marked throughout the competition:
Competitors to work to tolerances of within +/- 3mm
Competitors have to work in a safe manner and will lose marks if this is not adhered to
At the Regional Qualifiers the maximum working time for the task is 6 hours
At the UK National Final the maximum working time for the task is 18 hours
The competition only takes place within the UK
To take part in this competition you should be able to:
Understand basic geometry
Be able to time work properly and work at a pace which will allow completion within 6 hours
Plan for and provide the required tools for the task
Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriately
Fix and coat to both thin coat and undercoat metal beads
Mix and apply plaster with minimal wastage, these will include lightweight undercoats and finishes
Be able to mix and use fine casting plasters with minimal waste
Set out for, run and position fibrous panel moulds accurately. These moulds will be both straight and curved and will require stopping in and mitering
Work to tolerances of within +/- 2mm to 3mm depending on length,
