After completing the Redrow Homes graduate scheme, I took up a role in the company's land and planning department in the South Wales division.
My role now centres on identifying and purchasing land suitable for residential development in South Wales. I work closely with architects, engineers and local councils to successfully promote and process sites through the planning system. This process includes submitting planning applications for developments of up to thousands of dwellings.
A career in construction can be extremely rewarding, both financially and socially
What education route did you take from secondary school to where you are today?
I completed four A-levels at a local sixth-form college, then went on to study BSc Geography at Swansea University. After graduating from Swansea University, I started on Redrow Homes’ 15-month graduate scheme.
I consider construction to be the leading industry in the UK economy and employment opportunities can only rise with future growth in the sector
What is your favourite thing about your job?
The variety of my role. The nature of my work ensures no two days are the same. In any one week I could be meeting land owners, agents, local councils and consultants and need to adapt my approach accordingly.
What is the highlight of your day?
It is extremely satisfying to see people moving into a new home built on a development that you’ve helped obtain planning permission for.
Where do you want your career to take you?
Ultimately, I would like to take up a directorial position, be it divisional or regional.
What would you say to someone thinking about a career in construction?
A career in construction can be extremely rewarding, both financially and socially. To succeed in this sector, however, you need a strong work ethic and be willing to constantly assess and evaluate your workload (particularly in my role). I consider construction to be the leading industry in the UK economy, and employment opportunities can only rise with future growth in the sector, particularly given the UK's current mass housing shortage.
Is there anything else you would like to share, which would inspire others to follow their chosen career path?
If you are passionate about construction and can demonstrate this in your interviews and on the job, the possibilities in the industry can be endless.
