Angie Kerr is a Safety & Training Administrator for Midas, ensuring that best health and safety practices are carried out on site.

What does your role involve?
I develop risk assessments and method statements to ensure safe working practices on site from Midas employees and subcontractors. I'll go on site visits for safety tours and inspections to make sure that safe working practices are being met and to encourage two way communication between the Safety team and Midas operatives and managers. I also have the responsibility for operating the Training Matrix to ensure that all employees' safety & training qualfications are current and appropriate.
I enjoy learning something new everyday, whether it be in connection with an issue, and new person or a new experience.
What do you like about your job?
I love the variation in my job role at Midas, as no two days are ever the same and I really enjoy working and communicating with the wide range people I get to encounter on a daily basis. It's great to be part of a strong team so that when we need to deal with conflict, we can make sure that an agreeable resolution is produced.

What's your working day like?
I have a balance of being in the office and then out on site which can vary in location day to day. I may start my day off sat at my desk in my smart uniform, and by the end of the day I could be in steel toe cap boots, a hi-viz jacket and safety helmet! The pace in my role often changes as well from being pretty relaxed in the office, sorting training records to then diffusing a potentially volatile situation out on site.
What skills do you need in your job?
Communication skills are probably the most essential in this type of role along with the ability to listen. Being empathetic is an important quality to have, but this needs to be balanced with being firm. You should also have good observation skills alongside the ability to coach others in their role to help them develop.
What was your background before starting this role?
I only recently stepped into this industry after working in the Health and Fitness industry. I had worked in that industry for 15 years as a personal trainer and also managing health clubs. I've also had experience in sales and changed industry after several years as a Member Relation Manager.
I feel that there is a strong link between the two industries because in health & safety terms, 'health' has always taken second place to 'safety', especially in the construction industry. This culture is now beginning to change and I am excited to be a part of it at this time.
What are you most proud of in your career?
I am proud of the fact that I have been able to maintain a good balance between my work and home life as I have young children.
Where do you see yoruself in ten years' time?
The aim of my role within Midas Cladding is to develop an Internal Training Academy as the business grows which will allow the majority of our training needs to be housed on site. Potentially we may look to develop this externally to our surrounding businesses. In ten years' time I see this being a successful business which I hope to be a shareholder in.
Any advice to someone thinking about a career in construction?
Do not be put off by lack of knowledge of the industry or the misconception that you have to be a certain sex or type of person. For this industry you need to have a wide range of people skills, and many of these can be learned through experience and training, and in construction, there's an abundance available!
