Once I had completed my GCSEs, I decided to further my studies at Peterborough Regional College where I completed a National Diploma and HND in Construction.
I’ve been very fortunate as my current employers are now sponsoring me to work while studying part-time for a degree in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management.
I enjoy seeing the progression of a site from start to finish, and seeing all the stages in between.
Tell us a bit more about what you do.
I’m still learning in my ongoing construction career, but currently I’m assisting the commercial team in placing sub-contractor orders and ensuring that they are then paid for the work they’ve completed. I also assist them with carrying out valuations and the procurement process needed in securing sub-contractors for a construction project.
Remember that it is never too late to refine your choices to find the best career path for you.
What do you love about your job?
Nothing ever stays the same, and every single day is completely different with something new to learn. I enjoy seeing the progression of a site from start to finish, and seeing all the stages in between.
I feel a huge sense of achievement when I complete a task, and I am gaining more and more knowledge and experience from working in construction as I go.
Where do you see your career progressing?
I aim to be a senior quantity surveyor as my construction career progresses, and the experience I’m gaining both in theory and practice will help me achieve that.
What advice would you give someone thinking about a career in construction?
There are a variety of different construction jobs and disciplines, so choosing one path to follow in construction can lead to doors opening in other areas. I would say that if an opportunity arises to work in one area, embrace it and learn as much as you can from it, because you never know how you’ll benefit from it in the future, in any future roles you work in. Remember that it is never too late to refine your choices to find the best career path for you.
