Tips & Advice

Figuring out what’s next after school can sometimes be daunting to think about. That’s why Go Construct has been asking our STEM Ambassadors and some industry apprentices to share what advice they wish they had when they left school and why a career in construction could be the right path for you.

Meet Dr Tariq Umar, Associate Professor in Built Environment

Hello, my name is Dr Tariq Umar. I am an Associate Professor in Built Environment at the University of the West of England, Bristol, and my work focuses on construction management, engineering sustainability, construction materials, safety, innovation and the wider built environment.

What advice would you give your younger self when leaving school?

The advice I would give my younger self is, keep an open mind. Do not think of construction only as bricks, concrete and hard hats. It is much broader than that. Construction is about shaping places, solving real problems, improving communities and creating a more sustainable future.

Why should school leavers consider a career in construction?

School leavers should consider a career in construction because it offers so many different pathways, whether you are interested in design, engineering, project management, digital technology, sustainability, health and safety, or working with people. It is an industry where your work has a visible impact.

What are some of the benefits of a career in construction?

The sector also helps you develop valuable skills such as teamwork, leadership, communication, problem-solving, creativity and decision-making. For me, the most rewarding part is knowing that construction can improve lives and leave something meaningful behind for future generations.
