Tips & Advice

Figuring out what’s next after school can sometimes be daunting to think about. That’s why Go Construct has been asking our STEM Ambassadors and some industry apprentices to share what advice they wish they had when they left school and why a career in construction could be the right path for you.

Meet Paula McMahon, Civil Engineer

My name is Paula McMahon and I am a Civil Engineer who works in the construction sector.  I have been lucky to have a variety of roles at all stages of construction including being a Construction Manager on a 40-acre site close to home which I regularly drive past. Now I help look after part of the strategic road network.

What advice would you give your younger self when leaving school?

When I was younger, I stressed about lots of things.  I would have benefited from enjoying being young a little more.  So, my advice would be stress less and have balance in your life.

Why should school leavers consider a career in construction?

There are many different types of careers in construction for all abilities, skills and aspirations.  I think school leavers should think of what a good day at work would look and feel like along with what skills they have and like to use.  Then look around for roles which suit these things.

What are some of the benefits of a career in construction?

Working in the construction industry builds communication skills as without them nothing would get done.  Construction is the only job where you can point at something larger than yourself and say I built that.
