That’s why Go Construct has been asking our STEM Ambassadors and some apprentices who currently work within our industry to share what advice they wish they had when they left school and why a career in construction could be the right path for you.
Meet Sophie Oldfield: Operations Director
My name is Sophie Oldfield, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building (FCIOB), and I am the Operations Director for a design and build construction company specialising in hospitality projects across the UK and beyond. I lead a talented team of Interior Designers, Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors and Health & Safety professionals, helping transform ideas into amazing spaces that people use and enjoy every day.
What advice would you give to your younger self leaving school?
If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be this: don't be afraid to fail. Some of my biggest lessons and greatest achievements have come from things not going to plan the first time. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn, improve and grow.
Why should you consider a career in construction?
Construction is an exciting industry with far more career opportunities than many people realise. Whether you're interested in design, technology, sustainability, project management or leadership, there is a role for everyone. No two days are the same, and there are endless opportunities to develop new skills and progress your career.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing a project come to life and knowing I helped create a space that people will enjoy for years to come. Construction teaches valuable life skills too, including teamwork, communication, problem-solving and resilience. If you want a career that is challenging, rewarding and full of opportunity, construction is a fantastic choice.
