Figuring out what’s next after leaving school can sometimes be daunting to think about. That’s why Go Construct has been asking our STEM Ambassadors and some apprentices who currently work within our industry to share what advice they wish they had when they left school, and why a career in construction could be the right path for you.
Meet Jack Strachan - Apprentice Construction Manager at Bovis
My name is Jack Strachan, and I am 20 years old, I have been in a construction role for a year now as an apprentice construction manager and I could not imagine myself being in any other industry.
What advice would you give to your younger self leaving school?
If I could give some advice to my younger self, it would be two things. The first would be to learn how to drive as soon as its feasible. The second piece of advice would be to invest in yourself as soon as you can, whether that’s mentally, physically or financially. Doing this will work wonders.
Why should you consider a career in construction?
If you are just leaving school and considering a career in construction I would recommend it, as everything about the industry is interesting as the skills you learn will stay with you and be practical for life. In my opinion it will also give you a different view in life as I will look at an older building in awe thinking about the history, the methods they used and how it's still standing.
