I’m responsible for ensuring there are safe systems of work in place throughout the business and that the business complies with health and safety regulations.

What does your role involve?
I work closely with project managers and site managers to make sure there are relevant risk assessments and method statements developed for works to take place on sites.
I’m also responsible for investigating any accidents or incidents that happen and ensure that these are reported and recorded correctly.
I complete site visits and check the teams are working safely to reduce the risk of accidents and assess the site so it’s compliant with H&S regulations.
What’s your average working day like?
From working closely with the project and site managers, I could either be spending a day in the office putting together risk assessments and construction phase plans, or I could be onsite with the site manager looking at how they are working and writing a report.
Sometimes I attend pre-start meetings to gather information about a project before it begins. I have to be organised and able to manage my diary as I have lots of meetings and visits to attend.
What do you like about your role?
I love going to sites and interacting with the site teams, as I get to see a project develop from start to finish, and get a great sense of achievement when the final project is complete. I like to think I have contributed to keeping the sites safe during the project and enjoy helping the teams with any H&S issues.

What skills/qualities do you need in your role?
I have to be able to communicate well to a whole variety of people including site teams, office staff and the board of directors. I also need to be able to solve problems, think logically and sometimes make quick decisions. I care about people’s welfare and I want people to be happy at work and get home safely.
What was your background before starting this role?
Previously I worked in retail for 13 years before becoming a HSQE Manager. As part of my previous role I conducted security audits and a small amount of H&S audits. When I was made redundant I decided I liked the H&S part of my role the most and I decided to pursue this as a career.
I completed 2 NEBOSH courses and got a job as a HSQE assistant at Cardinal and developed from there.
What are you most proud of in your career?
During my time with Cardinal we have achieved a “performance beyond Compliance” certificate from the considerate constructor scheme for 2 years consecutively and have won a Silver award. I am extremely proud of this, because it shows recognition for all the hard work we put into the local school visits, career days, caring for our workforce and the community, and the image of construction.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
I‘m studying to complete an NCRQ course in applied health and safety whilst I’m working, and I hope to finish this in the next 3 years. I see myself with Cardinal for the long term and to be a part of the senior management team. I would like to continue engaging with apprentices and help to develop our workforce of the future.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about a career in construction?
Do it! It’s never too late to start a career in construction. I’m proof that you can change your career direction. The construction industry is developing and becoming more innovative with the use of technology and the scope of job roles are vast, there really is something for everyone!
