About the apprenticeship programme at the university

The University of Manchester has excellent links with industry and businesses in the local area and houses two of the most important and cutting-edge facilities in UK science, engineering and technology: the Jodrell Bank Observatory and the National Graphene Institute.  

Apprentices benefit from being able to engage with the academics and professionals who work at Jodrell Bank and the NGI, as well as the inspirational environment that these facilities help to create on the Manchester campus.  

Technical apprenticeships (levels 2-7)

The University of Manchester runs a range of technical apprenticeships, with teaching provided by the university’s dedicated team of academic and technical staff. Apprentices spend a period of orientation within the university, followed by 24 weeks of block release at Trafford College. Working with skilled mentors from within the university’s senior workshop staff, apprentices develop a solid range of transferable skills that can be the basis of rewarding careers. The programmes include:  

  • Apprentice Laboratory Technician 
  • Apprentice Engineering Technician 
  • Apprentice Electrical Electronic Engineering Technician 
  • Apprentice Building Services Technician 
  • Apprentice Design and Draughting Technician 

Degree & higher apprenticeships at the University of Manchester

The University of Manchester is an approved training provider of higher apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships. It is committed to working with employers to deliver high-quality apprenticeships for their employees to increase their productivity, knowledge and to fill skills gaps. The university is one of several institutions in the city that offer degree apprenticeships. 

The University of Manchester also works closely with employers to deliver senior leader apprenticeships at Manchester Business School. The senior leader apprenticeships prepare existing staff seeking to improve their strategic leadership skills in any business sector, with a specialist course for people working in healthcare environments.

An apprenticeship with the University of Manchester gives you the skills you need to work as a technician in industry or even within the University itself. The University will support you in your search for a job after your apprenticeship ends, or if you choose to extend your training by taking a higher or degree apprenticeship. Qualified apprentices have the potential to enter any number of roles at the university, such as safety advisors, workshop technicians, electrical technicians and laboratory managers.  

Applying for an apprenticeship at the university 

To apply for Manchester University apprenticeships you should apply through the gov.uk apprenticeships website. Apprenticeship vacancies open each year in late Spring and start in September. Vacancies are advertised for six weeks. Once the application window has closed, shortlisted applicants are invited to a selection day in August at the University of Manchester.
