I work for Wates Construction who are a construction management company with their head office based in Leatherhead, Surrey.
I left my comprehensive school that I had been attending since Year 9 and moved to the UTC (University Technical College) in Greenwich as it specialised in engineering and construction. I always had a keen interest in this field but the UTC made me certain about the career I wanted to embark on. Wates Construction sponsored the UTC and managed to arrange work experience for me at a site nearby (Greenwich Peninsula). I enjoyed the work experience and arranged for another placement later that year. I applied to Evolve, the CITB Partnered Shared Apprenticeship Scheme for an apprenticeship with Wates and was offered a role to become one of their commercial trainees.
The best way to find out what career you are interested in is to undertake a work experience placement.
I am based on site four days a week and am currently undertaking a BTEC Level 3 in Construction and the Built Environment. I currently oversee the surveying side of construction so I deal with writing contracts for sub-contractors and with how much money the company is going to spend based on a budget. I also oversee the work of the sub-contractor.
A highlight for me is being able to go home and knowing that I’ve made a contribution to a project.
There’s a great balance to being out on site and being based in the office, and a highlight for me is being able to go home and knowing that I’ve made a contribution to a project.
In the next two years I would like to become an assistant surveyor and from that work my way up to project surveyor.
Knowing the career you want to get into from an early age is very helpful as when you leave school you are able to apply for apprenticeships and traineeships in the field you are interested in. This gives a great head start in your future career. The best way to find out what career you are interested in is to undertake a work experience placement. This enabled me to leave school with more understanding of the roles on offer in construction and determined to achieve the career that I had set my sights on.
