Plant inspector / controller

Plant inspectors/controllers are responsible for coordinating plant accounting and financial reporting activities.

The Role

  • Cost accounting
  • Financial closing and reporting
  • Calculating tax
  • Inventory management
  • Forecasting
  • Budgeting
  • Calculating the Return On Investment (ROI)
  • Well-rounded leaders, able to coach their team and act as a strategic business partner with their colleagues too
  • Overseeing internal accounts and processes means that plant inspectors/controllers offer guidance on improvement to ensure a plant runs efficiently at the lowest cost
  • Performing monthly analysis of trends and forecasts to highlight financial risks and opportunities
  • Typically, plant inspectors/controllers work around 40 hours a week, usually between 9am and 6pm
  • There may be times where you'll need to work overnight or at the weekend, depending on circumstances


  • Newly trained plant inspectors/controllers can earn in the region of £20,000£25,000
  • Trained with experience plant inspectors/controllers can earn in the region of £25,000£45,000
  • Senior plant inspectors/controllers can earn in the region of £45,000£60,000

Salaries depend on location, employer and level of responsibility, and salaries and career options improve with chartered status. 

Qualifications and Training

To become a Plant Inspector/Controller you will usually be expected to have experience in the plant/plant hire business or at least have mechanical engineering skills.

There are several qualifications offered by training organisations which can help you improve your skills in this area of work.
